Benaki Museum presents a retrospective exhibition for photographer Voula Papaioannou through 9 April 2006. Voula Papaioannou was born in Lamia and she grew in Athens. Her total photographs can be divided into 4 main themes: 1) her first steps as a photographer (1935-1940); 2) scenes from life in Athens after war (1940-1944); 3) the ruined Greek countryside and the reconstruction attempts (1944-1950); and 4) her contributions to the post-war depiction of Greece (1950-1955). The Voula Papaioannou's works represent the trend towards "humane photography" that arose as a result of the abuse of human rights during the war. They illustrate the personal signature of the photographer, her power to imply rather than inform, to create photographic images that depict special events and at the same time transcend time.
