February and March are carnival months in Athens. Masked characters, maypoles, performances for children, dance, music from around the world and lots of fun are on show as the people take to the streets. The Athens Carnival 2006 begins on "Tsiknopempti" (Smoke Thursday), February 23 through to "Kathara Deftera" (Clean Monday) on March 6. Many “ingredients” of this festive events takes place at Kotzia Square, the Panormou metro station, at Fokionos Negri, in Pangrati, Koliatsou Square, in Plaka, Syntagma Square, Kolonaki and the Zappeion Gardens. Popular singers participate in this year's fiesta: Yannis Yokarinis, Lorna, Afentoula Razeli in tango rhythms, the band Palyrria with ethnic - electronica repertoire, "Dytikes Sinoikies", Apurimac, Stelios Dionysiou, and others.
